Reed paused in the foyer of Alexanderâs, grateful that Selinaâs informant had been right.
Third booth past the wine cellar, partially screened by a white, marble pillar, there was Senator Kendrick. He was flanked by two gorgeous young women, and there was an open bottle of Romanée-Conti on the table. No surprise there. The senator was a fairly infamous womanizer. Not that Reed cared one way or the other. The senatorâs personal life was his own business.
Reed strode confidently past the maître dâ, rounded the end of the polished bar and came upon Kendrick before the man had a chance to spot him.
âGood evening, Senator.â Without waiting for an invitation, Reed slipped into the burgundy velvet booth, sliding up next to the blond woman, helping himself to a breadstick.
The senatorâs expression faltered, but the woman immediately curved her red lips into a welcoming smile, and she draped a long-fingered hand on Reedâs shoulder.
A waiter appeared at the table. âWould you care for a drink, sir? Some wine?â
âMacallan eighteen-year-old,â said Reed. âOne ice cube.â
The waiter nodded and withdrew.
âReed,â Kendrick finally acknowledged with a nod.
âBack from Washington?â Reed asked.
âThis afternoon.â
âIâve been trying to get hold of you.â
âI got your messages.â
âAnd?â
âAnd my lawyers have advised me not to speak publicly on the matter.â
Reed cracked the breadstick in half. âWhere my lawyers have advised me to convince you to speak publicly on the matter.â
Kendrickâs bushy-browed eyes narrowed.
âI was surprised to read about Hammond and Pysanski.â Reed let his gaze bore into the man heâd known and trusted for a dozen years. Not that Kendrick would be the first politician to go bad.
âAs was I.â
âSomething I should know?â asked Reed.
âShould we powder our noses, Michael?â asked the brunette woman.
âNo,â said Kendrick. âMr. Wellington wonât be staying long.â
The waiter set Reedâs drink down on the white tablecloth. Then he topped up the othersâ wineglasses and removed the bottle.
âReed Wellington?â asked the blond woman.
âIn the flesh,â Reed responded, giving her a brief, polite smile.
âI saw you in the paper just this morning.â She sidled a little closer, her arm stretching out along the back of the bench seat. âYouâre much better looking in color and three dimensions.â
Reed took a sip of the scotch, putting his focus on Kendrick. âDo you have something to hide?â
âWhat do you think?â
âI think Hammond and Pysanski were a very unexpected turn of events.â
âThat makes me guilty?â
âThat makes me look guilty.â Reed enunciated each word.
âYou go down, I go down,â said Kendrick.
âTrent says we get out front of it.â
Kendrick shook his head. âI donât want to close any doors.â
âWhat about the other?â Reed didnât have to mention the murder and blackmail for Kendrick to get the point. âI want my family safe, and the more information you can provideââ
âCanât help you there.â But there was something in Kendrickâs eyes. Something Reed couldnât quite put his finger on. Would Kendrick have to take the Fifth? Was the SEC actually on to something?
Reed downed the drink. âThis isnât going to sit well with my board of directors.
